Alfie Doughty transfer latest as Celtic urge Charlton to name their price for wideman

Celtic have asked Charlton Athletic to name their price for Alfie Doughty - as they prepare to try again for Paris St Germain’s Mitchel Bakker.

The Scottish champions have been in contact with the Addicks about their young, left-sided midfielder Doughty.

The problem is that the newly-relegated League One side are in turmoil due to the on-going takeover and ownership talks surrounding the club.

Celtic’s head of football operations Nick Hammond watched the 20-year-old, who was a regular in the Championship last season, in their 3-1 win over Swindon Town on Saturday.

Doughty is going into the final 10 months of his contract and could move cross-border for a knockdown price come the summer

Celtic would prefer to do a deal just now but they are waiting for a bit of clarity from the Charlton end.

Luton Town are also interested but the chance to move to Scotland would be a lot more appealing.

Doughty is seen as one for the future while Neil Lennon’s first-team priority remains another left-back.

Celtic have already asked about loaning PSG’s young Dutchman Bakker for the season but they will need to up the ante financially.

The Hoops are expected to go back in to try and seal a deal.

The good thing for Celtic is that they have a decent relationship with PSG as they previously took Odsonne Edouard on-loan before they signed him on a permanent basis.

Bakker, 20, only moved to the Champions League finalists from Ajax last summer.

Lennon is keen to bring in competition for Greg Taylor with Boli Bolingoli unlikely to force a way back into the team after his COVID-19 breach and suspension.

Celtic are likely to free up wages by moving Bolingoli on although Australian international Tom Rogic has knocked back a lucrative move to Qatar.

Southampton have also been linked with Kristoffer Ajer and long-term target Olivier Ntcham, although several other fringe players could go if the price is right.
