Alfie Doughty transfer latest as Celtic and Rangers suffer blow in bid to sign Charlton star

Celtic and Rangers have missed out on the signing of Alfie Doughty with the winger set to join Stoke City, according to a report.

The Charlton star was offered pre-contracts by both clubs but has decided to join Stoke in a £600k deal in this window instead of waiting until the summer.

Celtic had been chasing Doughty since last summer and had two bids rejected for the left-sided player, who can play at left back as well further forward.

But now the Daily Record report that Doughty has made his decision after a weekend of looking over his options and decided to stick with the English Championship.

It means Charlton will receive a fee, with cross-border rules meaning he could have joined either side of the Old Firm for a nominal price.

Both sides have taken advantage of the loophole to get talented youngsters from England without paying big fees in recent years.

Moussa Dembele is perhaps the most successful of those signings with Celtic then selling him for £20million to Lyon.

Steven Gerrard also brought Joe Aribo to Ibrox from Charlton in the summer of 2019 and the midfielder is now a key player for the Ibrox side.
