Alfie Doughty to Celtic transfer latest as Charlton chief makes signing plea with Hoops target

Charlton chairman Thomas Sandgaard has pleaded with Alfie Doughty to sign a new deal with the club.

The midfielder is out of contract next summer and has been widely linked with a move away from the English outfit.

Celtic were interested in the highly-rated youngster during the summer, but a deal never materialised.

Neil Lennon's side could still potentially acquire Doughty on a free next summer as they continue to keep tabs on the playmaker.

However, Doughty could still leave the Addicks this month with the transfer window opened for clubs in the English Football League.

But Sandgaard insists he is going nowhere before the deadline.

He told London News Online: “Alfie Doughty is someone we expect to be staying.

“No I don’t see that [Doughty going before the deadline]. He’s too important.”

Asked if he wants Doughty to extend his stay at Charlton so he isn't snapped up on the cheap by the likes of the Parkhead club, he added: “Of course. That would only be the right thing to do.

“I think he’s doing great and seems very comfortable at the club. It’s a really good foundation for talent like that.”
