Alfie Doughty lets Celtic and Rangers down as winger closes in on Charlton transfer exit

In-demand Alfie Doughty looks set to join Stoke City and disappoint Celtic and Rangers in the process.

Charlton had accepted a £600,000 bid from Michael O’Neill ’s side for their left-sided midfielder.

Doughty spent the weekend weighing up his options as he also had a pre-contract offer from Celtic and confirmed interest from Rangers, but had decided he would prefer to remain in England.

The 21-year-old is now set to hold talks with Stoke to see if a deal can be thrashed out.

It is a blow to Celtic as they made multiple bids for Doughty in the last window and were hopeful they would get him on a pre-contract.

Rangers had also held talks with Doughty’s representatives about a move to the Premiership.

Charlton also offered a new deal but boss Lee Bowyer was resigned to losing him when he knocked it back.

The move will also benefit Charlton as they will get a lot more money from Stoke than they would have got if he went cross-border to Scotland when he was out of contract in the summer,
