Alfie Doughty Celtic transfer boost as Charlton move hints at defender decision

Charlton have opted to bring in another left-sided defender as Celtic prepare one last offer for target Alfie Doughty.

Former St Mirren loanee Akin Famewo has joined the London side on a season-long loan from Norwich City.

As revealed by Record Sport , Doughty is considered to be the Parkhead club's prime target to replace Boli Bolingoli after his move to Istanbul Basaksehir.

They have previously made two failed bids for the English player who they see as someone who could compete for the left-back slot while also being able to play in midfield.

On his new arrival, Addicks manager Lee Bowyer said: "Akin is someone who naturally can play on that [left] side, who is confident, who can step out and he can play.

"He can also play left-back or left of a three – there is a lot of versatility with him, so he’s another good addition."

New Charlton owner Thomas Sandgaard completed his takeover of the Valley club on Friday and the immediate transfer business is a positive sign for Celtic that the change in stewardship won't scupper any talks.

He told Sky Sports : "Of course, if the price is right and we have a sufficient replacement, and Lee thinks it's the responsible move in terms of the squad, we'll do it.

"But we'll also be conservative. We're not going to sell players just to pay the wages of the staff or for a tax bill or something like that.

"We'll only sell players if it financially makes sense, if we get an offer that's good enough and is relative to how we need to keep them on board."
