Alfie Brown: ‘John Gordillo made me laugh so much it became disruptive’

Alfie Brown
‘I wore a do-rag for a week at 15 because I hate myself’ ... Alfie Brown.

The funniest standup I’ve ever seen

John Gordillo in Kentish Town. His routine about Zippos Circus made me laugh so much it became quite disruptive and hard for him to continue. I have quite an obnoxious laugh.

The funniest book I’ve ever read

A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. Soz for having a cool answer.

The funniest TV show I’ve ever seen

The most I’ve ever laughed is the shellfish episode of Broad City. I woke my children and choked on black beans.

The funniest item of clothing I’ve ever owned

I wore a do-rag for a week at 15 because I hate myself.

The funniest film I’ve ever seen

In Bruges, with specific regard to the alcoves.

The funniest heckle I’ve ever had

“You want to get back on the lithium, mate!” I had actually just stopped taking Seroquel – another kind of mood stabiliser – but, given that I hadn’t mentioned it, I was impressed with the gentleman’s perspicacity. I got off stage and cried into Paul McCaffrey’s arms; I am still very grateful to him for being so nice to me then.

The funniest thing that shouldn’t be funny

There is nothing that shouldn’t be funny. Some things aren’t funny but there is no should or shouldn’t. I can’t stand that stupid mewling nonsense. Just because you’re laughing at something doesn’t mean you’re not taking it seriously.

The funniest sketch I’ve ever seen

Victoria Wood’s channel swimmer. Or maybe that one of hers where Jim Broadbent runs the telephone deodorising business.

The funniest person I know

I recently spent some time with [comedian] Sean McLoughlin who is almost unreasonably funny.

The funniest meal I’ve ever eaten

I’m a vegan so I don’t eat funny meals. I eat humourless, haughty beans that think you’re shit.

Alfie Brown is at the Globe Inn, Wells, 28 May, part of Wells comedy festival, 26-28 May
