Alfie Barbeary tackle: The moment of madness that saw a young England player sent off and led to calls for a long ban

It was a game to forget for England as they kicked off their bid for a fourth World Rugby Under-20 Championship crown against Six Nations rivals Ireland.

Not only did England lose a pool game for the first time since 2015, when 2019 Grand Slam champions Ireland romped to a 42-26 victory in Santa Fe, Steve Bates' side also copped plenty of social media flak for their indiscipline.

No.10 Manu Vunipola, cousin of England titans Billy and Mako, picked up a yellow for a high shot on former Wales Under-16s full-back Iwan Hughes, which easily could have been red.

But the sending-off of Wasps hooker Alfie Barbeary in the 66th minute - five minutes after coming on off the bench - was the tackle that commanded plenty of chat on social media.

The 18-year-old arrived with his side trailing by 28-26.

With England defending near to their own line, Ireland flanker John Hodnett was upended by Barbeary and the Munster man went over the top of his shoulder tumbling head first to the ground.

The referee consulted the TMO who wasted little time in confirming England's worst fears and the front-rower was red carded.

It saw the youngster receive plenty of criticism for his tackle on social media with some suggesting he be banned for the remainder of the tournament and others calling for him to be sent home.

But he too has some springing to his defence demanding the critics lay off him.
