Alexis Sanchez issues statement apologising to Man Utd fans after Cardiff defeat

Manchester United flop Alexis Sanchez has issued an apology to supporters for his poor season after he was left out of the 2-0 home defeat to Cardiff.

Sanchez's omission meant he finished his first full season at United with just two goals from 27 appearances, and despite arriving on a free in January 2018 the former Arsenal man has failed to replicate his form from his days at the Emirates Stadium.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is understood to be open to allowing him to leave Old Trafford this summer, and Sanchez has now taken to Instagram to reflect on another difficult season.

After apologising to fans, Sanchez criticised reports of "things that were not even true" and insisted he was a professional during his time at United, speaking in the past tense.

The forward also said players and staff at United were questioning the effort put in for the shirt after winning just two of their final 12 games since beating Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League in March.

He posted: "It was a very tough season...the fan are the ones who deserve an apology as they always support you no matter what happens.

"Personally, I didn’t perform as much as I was expecting because of unpredictable injuries. Press and people were speculating of things that were not even true. I was always a professional in all aspects.

"I apologise to the fans for not be able to achieve our goals, Nevertheless we are Manchester United!

"Players and Staff are questioning if we were doing the right thing and if we were giving our best for this football shirt ... I'm certain that Manchester United one day will return to be the club, as it was in the old days with Mr. Alex Ferguson."
