Alexis Sanchez gives Manchester United transfer lesson

Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes that Alexis Sanchez taught his former club a transfer lesson upon his departure this summer.

Sanchez arrived at United in January 2018 to much fanfare following a swap deal with Arsenal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan go to the Emirates in exchange.

Unfortunately, however, Sanchez never managed to get going at United and in 45 appearances he only managed to score a mere five goals as his form fell off a cliff.

As a result Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deemed him surplus to requirements in the United attack and he eventually joined up with ex-teammate Romelu Lukaku at Inter.

The Chilean has joined the Serie A side on a season-long loan deal but it's difficult to imagine him getting back in the United side, and Neville believes the club will have learned a valuable lesson from the experience.

"To be fair, we'd watched Alexis Sanchez for three, four, five years at Arsenal," the former United captain said on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.

"He was tenacious, goalscorer, giving his all every single minute of every game, nobody could have seen the disaster that was about to happen. I don't know what happened to him.

"That wasn't Alexis Sanchez that played at Manchester United that we watched. He'd been proven, you knew that United were only going to get a couple of years out of him but he was almost free in some senses, I know his wages were massive.

"But my point is no one could have seen how bad he could have been but it was a lesson to United. Falcao, Di Maria, Schweinsteiger, Sanchez - they've done it and they've spent and wasted hundreds of millions of pounds on these players."
