Alexandria neighbours create living advent calendar to boost community spirit

Forward-thinking residents in Alexandria are on the countdown to Christmas with their living advent calendar.

Organised by Grace and Eddie MacKinnon who were inspired by a similar project while visiting family in Plymouth last December, the scheme is hoped to boost community spirit in the area.

The idea is that residents from 24 homes in a street or community decorate and illuminate a window or windows with festive items and lights throughout the month.

Eddie said: “We posted out flyers to each household in January and followed it up in October by visiting as many houses as possible explaining what a living advent calendar was and how we proposed to bring it to our own street in Alexandria.”

Grace added: “We have had a positive and enthusiastic  response and have allocated each house a number on a first come basis the only stipulation was that the number should be placed in their window on December 1 and the house be decorated by their allocated number.”

Each house has at least one allocated number from 1 to 24 and remains decorated from 6.30pm from its day of opening until 12th night (January 6).

Eddie said: “The goal of the project is just to have fun and create a nice way of bringing the community together.”
