Alexandria artist helps raise funds for CHAS at charity plate sale

An Alexandria artist’s plate has sold for more than £1000 at an auction held to raise money for CHAS.

Ross Muir’s work was one of 40 designed plates that were sold to raise funds at the charity’s first Step up to the Plate Showcase, with other work submitted by artists such as June Carey, and Adrian McMurchie.

It wasn’t just artists who got involved either, with celebrity entrants like Phill Jupitus and Susan Calman also playing their part to help raise funds.

Organised by Glasgow School of Art Ceramics graduate and mixed media artist Barbara Bates, the idea for Step Up to the Plate was first conceived two years ago.

Barbara alongside husband Simon have run Cafe Ceramico, a ceramic painting cafe in East Kilbride since 2003, and she decided to mark the 15th anniversary of the business by organising a fundraiser for CHAS, who they have worked with and supported for more than six years.

Barbara said: It was an unforgettable night - people coming together to bid for one-off original art on plates, by artists who so generously gave of their time and talent for a brilliant cause. I’m hugely humbled!”

Hayley Smith, assistant community fundraiser for CHAS said: “There was a real buzz in the room last night and a lot of love for this project.

“It’s such a unique idea.”
