Alexandre Lacazette has apologised to Arsenal supporters following his red card in Thursday night's shock Europa League defeat to BATE Borisov, admitting he 'should have stayed calm'.

The Gunners were trailing 1-0 in Belarus courtesy of Stanislav Dragun's first-half header when they were reduced to 10 men with just five minutes of the match remaining.

Lacazette, who had earlier seen a goal disallowed, caught Aleksandar Filipovic with a flailing elbow and was promptly dismissed by referee Srdjan Jovanovic.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery admitted the French striker's suspension was 'bad news' and insisted that such frustration 'needs controlling'.

Lacazette himself took to social media shortly after the surprise loss to say sorry to supporters for not keeping his cool.

"Letting the team down like that is the worst feeling," he wrote on Twitter.

"I should have stayed calm but it’s not always easy. Sorry.

"There are still 90 minutes to play and I believe that my teammates will make it to the next round."
