Alexandre Lacazette's reaction to Arsenal goal speaks volumes about dressing room role

Alexandre Lacazette backed up Mikel Arteta's leadership claim as he conducted the celebrations after Arsenal went in front against Leeds United.

Calum Chambers came off the bench to put the Gunners ahead in their Carabao Cup last-16 clash with the Whites before Eddie Nketiah doubled the lead to secure progression to the quarter-finals on Tuesday night.

Chambers wheeled away in celebration after scoring his first goal in over two years and found substitute Lacazette waiting to embrace him after running onto the pitch from the touchline.

The French striker had a beaming smile on his face which laid bare his dedication to the cause even though there is great uncertainty surrounding his future at the Emirates.

Lacazette is out of contract next summer and, as it stands, will leave Arsenal after five years.

The 30-year-old has been in and out of the starting line-up this season but he remains a model professional and came off the bench to help see out the 2-0 victory over Leeds.

Lacazette's emphatic celebrations with a much-rotated XI summed up the leadership role earmarked for him in the dressing room by Mikel Arteta.

Ahead of the cup tie, the Spanish manager highlighted the former Lyon star as one of the figureheads in his youthful squad alongside captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and midfield stalwart Thomas Partey.

"The group age [of the squad] is a little bit closer so they are experiencing most of the same things and they talk a lot about it," Arteta told Arsenal's official website.

"Then we have the senior players that they have to lead and they have to take that role, and they are doing that in a different way.

"Leading is not telling someone what he needs to do, for me it is being able to transform that person and not just with words, but with facts as well.

"There are players now that on that pitch that they are able to transmit something and change certain behaviours and attitudes in other players. That is contagious, and for me that is leadership."

Lacazette has scored three goals this season, the latest of which was an equaliser against Crystal Palace last week.

He will be free to enter talks with clubs outside England in January, but Arteta hopes it will not come to that.

"Anything is possible," said Arteta of Lacazette's contract situation. "It depends on a lot of things, it is not just a matter of being willing."
