Alexandre Lacazette receives blow to his hopes of breaking back into the French national squad

Alexandre Lacazette has received another blow to his hopes of making it back into the fold of the French national side, as one of his main competitors for a place in the squad has proved his worth to manager Didier Deschamps.

Lille forward Jonathan Ikone was selected ahead of Lacazette in the French squad for their European qualifiers against Albania and Andorra.

The 21-year-old made his international debut as a second half substitute in the first game against Albania on Saturday evening and made an instant impact on the international stage by scoring France's fourth goal in a 4-1 victory. The goal came less than 10 minutes after he entered the field.

Lacazette has been snubbed by Deschamps in recent times, despite proving his ability to score goals and make an impact for Arsenal in the Premier League. He has two goals in three appearances already this season, after scoring 13 Premier League goals during 2018/19.

His last international appearance for France came in a 2-2 friendly draw with Germany in 2017, a game where he scored both of the nation's two goals.

Arsene Wenger not ruling out leading a team at next World Cup

Ikone was preferred over the Arsenal striker after scoring three goals and providing 10 assists in Ligue 1 last season, if the 21-year-old continues to impress in international football, then Lacazette may find it even harder to regain his place.
