Alexandre Lacazette dropped by Arsenal as transfer deadline looms

Mikel Arteta has dropped Alexandre Lacazette to the bench for Arsenal's game with Sheffield United.

Lacazette started and scored in the defeat at Liverpool, but did miss a gilt-edged chance to equalise in the second half.

Eddie Nketiah came in Lacazette for the Carabao Cup tie against the same opposition, with the Gunners winning on penalties on that occasion.

And Nketiah keeps his place up front, alongside captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Willian.

Lacazette has started the season in fine form, scoring three times in the opening three games of the season.

Elsewhere, summer signing Gabriel, who shone in midweek, has retained his place at the back in place of Rob Holding.

In midfield, Arteta has opted to start Dani Ceballos in place of Granit Xhaka. He will start in the middle of park with Mohammed Elneny who has managed to wrestle his way back into the Spaniard’s thoughts.

Asked for the reason behind the changes, Arteta said: “We need to rotate, it’s been very physically and mentally demanding. I want fresh players, again, it’s a very tricky opponent.

“We struggled against them last year, we have to be at our best again.”

Arteta was more coy on a potential formation change, suggesting it was more about utilising his squad.

On the Blades, he added: “It’s a team that plays with a lot of courage, a lot of determination, high pace and they complicate you with some very simple things.

“They have some very good rotations and overloads, they are able to generate in certain areas. You have to control it, let’s see how it goes.”

Arsenal XI: Leno; Luiz, Gabriel, Tierney; Bellerin, Elneny, Ceballos, Saka; Willian, Nketiah, Aubameyang
