Judith Ann Venn appeared in the Cleveland Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning on one charge of murder — domestic violence — over her husband's death.

The ABC understands police will allege that Ms Venn poisoned her husband with medication and slit his wrists.

Police were called to the home in Jasmine Street last Friday morning, after Lance Hilton Venn, 64, was discovered dead.

Officers declared a crime scene and launched an investigation, culminating in yesterday's arrest.

Ms Venn sat quietly in the dock of the magistrates court during the brief mention.

It's understood Ms Venn will allege she had endured a long history of domestic violence.

Ms Venn's lawyer Sam Wildermuth said she will defend the charge.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta told Ms Venn defendants were not able to apply for bail on murder charges at the magistrate court and remanded her in custody.

The case has been adjourned to October 29.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
