Alexander Zverev lost his cool in an astonishing meltdown on the court during his shock Australian Open defeat to Milos Raonic.

The German was handed a humiliating defeat in straight sets by the Canadian, who progresses to the quarter-finals after a superb 6-1, 6-1, 7-6 victory.

Zverev struggled to show anything like the form that has seen the 21-year-old climb to fourth in the world rankings and his frustration was clear for the spectators to see.

After producing several double faults, the youngster's temper started to flare and he began remonstrating with his team.

And the tension soon got too much for Zverev, who was fading without a trace to the far superior Raonic, with the 28-year-old winning eight games in a row after being broken in the very first game.

After serving his fifth double-fault to cough up a second break in the second set, Zverev lost his temper and hammered his racquet into the ground until it was mangled.

That act earned him a code violation warning from the umpire and a dismayed look from Goran Ivanisevic, the Croatian who now coaches Raonic.

Despite his outburst, the crowd got behind Zverev as he mounted a comeback in the third set.

But ultimately, Raonic deserved his win leaving the fourth seed out to wonder where it all went wrong for him at a Grand Slam once again.
