Alexander Volkanovski surprised by UFC 284 decision loss to Islam Makhachev: ‘I won 2, 3 and 5’

PERTH, Australia – Alexander Volkanovski wants to run things back with Islam Makhachev.

The featherweight champion wants a rematch with lightweight champ Makhachev after he lost a close decision in Saturday’s UFC 284 main event in Perth, Australia.

After he rewatched the fight, Volkanovski (25-2 MMA, 12-1 UFC) thought he did enough to dethrone Makhachev (24-1 MMA, 13-1 UFC) for a second title.

“Just watched the fight, I definitely think I won 2, 3 and 5,” Volkanovski poster on Twitter. “Surprised I didn’t get my hand raised! Let’s do the rematch, anywhere, anytime!”

But despite thinking he did enough to win, Volkanovski still is disappointed with his showing. He thinks he could’ve done better than what he showed.

“I could’ve done more, so I’m going to be hard on myself,” Volkanovski told reporters at his UFC 284 post-fight news conference. “A lot of people probably counted me out, like, ‘Oh, wow.’ But I never counted myself out. I expected to win, so I’m disappointed.

“I know I could’ve done more, could’ve capitalized on things earlier as well. I did think he was going to be stronger, and I could’ve done more earlier. But what do you do? Credit to him, yeah?”
