Alexander redux

Alexander's back on: film director Baz Luhrmann. Photograph: Chris Pizzello/AP

Good news, probably. Hollywood producer Dino de Laurentiis tells Il Corriere della Sera that Baz Luhrmann's version of Alexander is back on. (You can read our summary in English here). Luhrmann, you'll be aware, is the flamboyant Australian director behind the high-octane, high-colour, high-contrast, and frequently high-kicking films Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge. (For my taste, they're a little headache-inducing, but the kids seem to like them).

There's no suggestion that the new Alexander will be a song-and-dance number, but it should be interesting to see Luhrmann's flighty Bohemian sensibilities brought to bear on such an epic subject. Let's just hope it goes down better than the Oliver Stone version.
