Alexander Gustafsson on potential UFC return: ‘Anything can happen’

As the months go by, it becomes increasingly apparent Alexander Gustafsson is edging closer to a potential UFC return.

Ever since he announced his retirement in June, following his fourth-round submission loss to Anthony Smith in Stockholm, Sweden, he’s been anxious to compete.

In what could mark an important step in that direction, Gustafsson will take part in a no-gi grappling match on Dec.11, taking on Anton Turkalj in Gothenburg, Sweden.

“I got the itching back when I started training, but I am not prepared for a full MMA camp yet,” Gustafsson told MMA Junkie. “I also need to work on my grappling so this is perfect, and that I get the chance to do it at home, in a town I haven’t been competing at for a long time. The event I will compete at is a new up and coming Swedish promotion called ‘AK Fighting Championship’, which I am also part owner at and it will be amazing.”

“My competition mind is always there and I would lie if I said this is not a first step but let’s see what happens.”

Gustafsson, a three-time UFC light heavyweight title challenger, vows that should he decide to return to MMA competition bra, he’ll be the best version of himself yet.

“Anything can happen but I am sure that when it happens, I will be the best I’ve ever been.”

Gustafsson’s retirement took many by surprise, including his own team. Losing in his home country of Sweden was a tough pill to swallow, but after some time to reflect, he admits his decision was made out of emotion.

“Nobody knew but of course I was really pissed and disappointed of the result,” Gustaffson said. “So you can say that it probably was in the heat of the moment.”

Stepping away from the sport re-ignited the fire a bit Gustafsson, who has been a top ranked 205-pounder for the majority of his UFC career.

“That, I believe I needed to do honestly,” Gustafsson said. “I believe that you sometimes need to take a break to realize what you have and that is not only meant for sports only but life in general.”

Should “The Mauler” return to UFC competition, he no longer has anyone specific in mind. He had initially mentioned wanting to fight former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold, but for now, he’ll decide when the time comes.

“No I honestly don’t have anyone special in mind,” Gustafsson said. “I will take it when it comes to that point.”
