Alexander Greek Thomson and his Glasgow buildings still celebrated today

One of Scotland's greatest architects was born on this day, 204 years ago – and his legacy lives on in some of Glasgow's most beautiful buildings.

Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, who lived from 1817 to 1875, designed numerous villas, terraces, tenements and commercial office blocks as well as three churches across the city.

His elegant works have helped shape the fabric in parts of the west end, southside and the city centre. Have a wander and look out for some of the visionary builder's hidden gems, a geometric facade, towering pillars, ornamental stonework and deep-set windows.

Scott Abercrombie is Chair of the Alexander Thomson Society, founded 30 years ago to promote and protect his work.

He said: "The unique thing about Thomson was the way that he then abstracted this and applied it to the buildings the city needed at the time, such as tenements and warehouses, instead of recreating the temples of the ancient world like many of the architects before him. It is both this fusion of different historic styles and the application of them to new typologies that makes him so important and original."

Have a look at some of Thomson's iconic buildings in our gallery and learn more about his story below.
