Alexander Albon escapes dramatic 130mph crash during Chinese Grand Prix F1 practice

London-born Alexander Albon walked away from a hefty crash in the final practice session at the Chinese Grand Prix.

The 23-year-old rookie, who was raised in England but races under the Thai flag, lost control of his Toro Rosso at the 130mph exit of the final corner in Shanghai, sliding across the gravel and smashing into the barrier.

Albon sustained significant damage to the left-hand side of his car, but got out unaided before he was taken to the medical centre.

He immediately apologised to his team, who were no doubt relieved when they saw the driver climb out of the car before he was given the all-clear by F1 medics.

The Toro Rosso racer, however, was unable to take part in qualifying, with his car in pieces following the force of the high-speed impact.

He told Sky Sports: "I’m OK – more angry and disappointed than anything else.

"It was a big crash, but it was a silly one as well. But too much AstroTurf, bit too much throttle and just a bit greedy for FP3.

Lewis Hamilton’s dominance with Mercedes branded ‘lucky’ by F1 legend Sir Jackie Stewart

"I’m a bit disappointed because we had a good chance to be in Q3 today, and I think the car’s been really strong all weekend. So not happy with it.

"It would be a bad excuse [to call it a rookie error]. Maybe you can, but I don’t think it should have happened. I think I was a little bit too greedy. I was obviously pushing trying to find the limits, but it should have been in qualifying rather than FP3."

The qualifying session saw Valtteri Bottas edges out Lewis Hamilton to F1 pole at Chinese Grand Prix to pole position for F1's 1,000th Grand Prix on Sunday.
