Alexa is recording our conversations - Ex-Amazon executive switches off his device when he's having a 'private moment'

Many people have developed theories and conspiracies about their Amazon Alexa recording conversations.

According to the Manchester Evening News, conspiracy theorists might have some conviction behind their claims as our Alexa devices can actually record what we say - even when we aren't interacting with it.

This information surfaced when an ex-Amazon executive told BBC's Panorama special, Amazon: What They Know About Us: "I turn off Alexa whenever I'm having a private moment."

This is because Alexa operates using "wake words", meaning it can sometimes be alerted after picking up on false words when you are not interacting with the device.

Once it picks up on there words, it starts recording.

Luckily, you can find and delete the recordings (David Parry/PA Wire)

However, it doesn't always record full conversations, usually only catching soundbites.

An Amazon spokesman said the company take these recordings "to help improve Alexa, we manually review and annotate a small fraction of one per cent of Alexa requests.

"Access to data annotation tools is only granted to a limited number of employees who require them to improve the service, and our annotation process does not associate voice recordings with any customer identifiable information.

"Customers can opt-out of having their voice recordings included in the fraction of one percent of voice recordings that get reviewed."

How to find and delete recordings

Luckily, there is a way to find these recordings and delete them for good. Alternatively, give the recordings a listen- you might catch your family saying some hilarious things.

  1. Open the Alexa app

  2. Go to the Settings menu

  3. Select Settings

  4. Select Alexa Privacy and then select an entry or review a specific date range

  5. Tap the text you want to hear and then click the Play icon

  6. If you want to delete a recording, simply tick the empty box next to it, and tap "Delete Selected Recordings".
