Alex Telles opens up on Luke Shaw competition for Manchester United left-back spot

Alex Telles believes the form of Luke Shaw can only be positive for Manchester United as he fights to earn more first-team minutes.

The Brazilian joined United in the summer transfer window but has struggled to dislodge Shaw at left-back, with the Englishman raising his performance levels amid senior competition.

Telles has made six Premier League appearances for United this season but has started just once in 2021, in the FA Cup victory over Watford.

Despite a lack of minutes in recent weeks, Telles has insisted that competition between himself and Shaw is healthy and will benefit United across the course of the campaign.

“I'm very prepared to play,” Telles told United's official site.

“I'm also very happy with the performances of Luke and his hard work.

“I came here to play. And both me and Luke really develop together, both in training and games. I've played and have put in some good performances as well.

“United benefit from this as well, United the club, because we win by having good players available. And if needed I'm here, ready, focused and prepared to play.

“And once again I repeat that I'm really happy for Luke Shaw, his great performances and contributions.”

Telles is likely to be involved against Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday, which would be the Brazilian's first taste of the north-west derby.

Having played in some ferocious clashes already in his career, Telles is looking forward to learning more about the rivalry at Old Trafford this weekend.

“I think I maybe started to understand how big the rivalry is when I came to Manchester United,” he said.

“These are two really big clubs, both with a massive history. I think all the games between the two sides from the beginning right up until now have been competitive, and I saw in the previous game how great the rivalry was and I'm sure we will be very prepared for this match.”
