Alex Smith won’t get external fixator off for another month

Alex Smith is doing great, by Jay Gruden’s own account.

But the Washington Redskins quarterback is still a long way removed from thinking about playing football again, He’s still got the external fixator on the leg he broke last season, and he doesn’t figure to get it removed until July at the earliest.

The updated timetable comes from Gruden — as reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo — and all but confirms Smith won’t play in 2019 as he recovers from the compound fracture and subsequent infection. Not unexpected news, of course, though it has been nice to see Smith around the team during minicamps and throwing the ball with teammates.

Presumably, the next update with Smith will involve getting the device removed. Until then, he’ll likely remain around the team and helping support quarterbacks Case Keenum and Dwayne Haskins as training camp begins July 25.
