All eyes were on Washington quarterback Alex Smith on Wednesday afternoon at practice, just as they have been for the past couple of weeks as he continues to battle back from a calf strain that has held him out of two games now.
Smith did not practice on Wednesday but went through some light work on the side, and afterward, he mentioned to media that he felt good with his progression, and is hoping to continue to take steps forward this week, which could ultimately see him playing on Sunday in a win-or-go-home game for Washington against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Alex Smith said they have a plan for how they want to progress his work during the week. Said he was very close to playing last week. Gives him hope for this week, but also some pause because felt good and then calf bothered him Saturday morn after working Friday

Smith told the media that he was really close to playing last week against the Carolina Panthers after feeling good in full work on Friday, but he felt some soreness on Saturday that ultimately held him out. We will see if he can continue to progress this week, but if not, Washington will have to go to backup QB Taylor Heinicke as the starter.
