Alex Smith is taking time to tutor Dwayne Haskins and discuss play on the field

Alex Smith may not be able to contribute on the field, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been a difference-maker for the Washington Redskins off of it.

So far through six days of training camp, Smith has taken the mentorship role for rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins. On multiple occasions, the two have been seen side-by-side on the field when Haskins is not taking reps, likely discussing what thee rookie is seeing out there, and more importantly, what he is not seeing. One beat reporter for Washington went so far as to say they’ve been attached at the hip.

Haskins has been impressive so far in training camp, and he has shown the ability needed to be a prominent quarterback in the NFL. As is expected, he is still making a number of rookie mistakes — mainly misreading blitzes and struggling with the snap count — but he has routinely shown the drive to get better, be it by staying late after practice to get extra reps or picking the brain of older players.

If he can continue to develop and solicit the help around him, there is no doubt that he will eventually be a great QB for the Redskins.
