Alex Smith enjoying the challenge of his comeback bid

Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith is nothing if not someone who enjoys challenges and wants to pull off the unthinkable.

At this point, Smith’s comeback bid from what seemed like a career-ending injury indeed seems almost impossible. Yet Smith has repeatedly made it clear at camp he wants to keep going in that direction.

He reiterated as much again this week, according to Yahoo Sports’ Terez Paylor:

“I’m still determined [to play], still marching down the road, still optimistic,” Smith told Yahoo Sports. “I want to push it, for the challenge’s sake. I want to see what I’ve got … I enjoy the challenge, even to this [recovery], coming out here and being with the guys. It’s not going to last forever. I’d like to see where it leads.”

Realistically, Smith isn’t stepping a foot on the field for the duration of the 2019 season, as he only recently got out of his external fixator. But 2020 is a different, albeit interesting conversation.

In the interim, Smith continues to show up to work and keep a close eye on rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who he has taken under his wing.
