Alex Scott gets emotional as she recalls being in a 'really dark place' with alcohol

The One Show's Alex Scott fought back tears during an appearance on Wednesday's episode of the programme as she spoke about her life.

The former professional footballer appeared on the show to chat to Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas about new memoir How (Not) To Be Strong.

As Alex Jones described the book, Alex said: "Already, you explaining that I get emotional about it. Because I’ve never wanted someone to feel sorry for me."

Her memoir details her struggles with alcoholism in recent years and also how she's dealt with cruel trolls online.

Alex, 37, revealed she has only recently learned how to be vulnerable and open about her past.

“It was always, ‘put on a front. I’m fine, I’m independent, I can get through anything'," she said.

“But, I think, from the last couple of years, I’ve been on my own personal journey.

“I wrote the book because I wanted my mum to be free of it, now. I want my mum to feel she has the whole rest of her life to live.

“And for me to be free of all the emotions, and all the heaviness of it all. So, I’m excited for, now this next chapter," she continued.

When Alex Jones mentioned a time in 2018 when things came to a head, Alex said: "I was in a really dark place."

Detailing the abuse she's received from trolls, Alex became quite emotional as she admitted how scared she's been.

"It's hard as well because you go back to putting that front on that I never wanted someone to feel sorry for me all through that time, so it was like I'll tell you a little bit but not to the extent where I'm actually fearing for my life, which was never a nice feeling," she explained.

"And obviously then not telling my mum because then I don't want her to worry as well," Alex continued as her voice broke.

Fighting back tears, she then said: "I know it's supposed to be a light show, I'm sorry guys!"

"Alex, YOU ARE THE BEST," one person wrote, while another tweeted: "Aw I love @AlexScott so much ya know #TheOneShow."

A third viewer posted: "@AlexScott you are brilliant #TheOneShow," and another added: "Listening to @AlexScott on the #TheOneShow and she is an absolute hero, queen, role model, inspiration and a straight up wonderful human being."
