Alex Scott fans defend her stunning SPOTY outfit as they call critics 'sexist'

Alex Scott 's outfit choice has once again become a topic of conversation on Twitter.

The Football Focus presenter joined Gary Lineker, Gabby Logan, Clare Balding on Sunday night, as they crowned this year's Sports Personality of the Year.

Alex, 37, opted for a a white and silver striped dress, complete with separate glitzy sleeves, for the swanky event at Media City in Manchester.

As the awards show aired on the BBC, many took to Twitter to give their feedback on the star's fashion choices.

Amidst the many negative quips about Alex's ensemble, many fans of the presenter jumped to her defence - suggesting that her critics are often a certain type of person who don't like to see a woman involved in sports journalism.

"Alex Scott dressed like a midsommar sacrifice," one cheeky SPOTY viewer joked online during Sunday night's broadcast.

Another viewer also offered some unsolicited fashion advice, tweeting: "Looks like Alex Scott has had to wear the last thing the shops had for sale...."

A third added: "Why is Alex Scott dressed like an extra from Star Wars?"

There was also unjustified criticism for the former footballer in general, with comments like: "I don’t know why but I can’t stand Alex Scott, her voice grinds on my nerves."

As Alex trended on the social media platform, many pointed out that a lot of her style critiques had come from men.

"Alex Scott looks amazing! A very talented and elegant lady. Haters have no fashion sense whatsoever," one of many defensive fans tweeted on Sunday.

"Suddenly Middle Aged Men on here have turned into fashion and hair experts to advise Alex Scott on her looks! Bless them," another pointed out.

"I see Alex Scott is getting abuse again for what she is wearing," a third viewer began their observation.

"Christ who tf cares?! These men complaining about her looks is a disguise for their blatant sexism. Now there's the uncomfortable truth for them!!"

A fourth said in defiance: "Sick of all the pathetic digs at Alex Scott. I’m calling it racism or misogyny - take your pick!"

Earlier this year, Alex was forced to respond to criticism surrounding her London accent.

After ex-House of Lords member Digby Jones pointed out her "noticeable inability to pronounce her 'g's at the end of a word", Alex responded by saying she was "proud" of her working class background.

"I’m from a working class family in East London, Poplar, Tower Hamlets & I am PROUD," the star hit back with on Twitter.

"Proud of the young girl who overcame obstacles, and proud of my accent!"

"It’s me, it’s my journey, my grit," she added at the end of the first of a trio of tweets in July.

"A quick one to any young kids who may not have a certain kind of privilege in life," she continued.

"Never allow judgements on your class, accent, or appearance hold you back," she wisely advised.
