Alex Salmond will face no further criminal charges as Met Police drops investigation

Alex Salmond will face no further criminal investigation after police in London dropped complaints dating back to his time as an MP.

The Metropolitan Police was passed details from its counterparts in Scotland from four complainers in England who had come forward as part of the original inquiry into the conduct of the ex-first minister and former SNP leader.

Salmond was charged in January 2019 with sexual offences against several women during his time in office.

His case came to the High Court in Edinburgh in March, where he was acquitted of all charges following a two-week trial.

Detectives in London were investigating one of the allegations passed to them from Police Scotland but have now decided not to move forward after conversations with the woman involved.

The woman who raised a complaint regarding Salmond said she had asked police not to pursue the probe.

She also raised concerns over her safety.

On Tuesday, Scotland’s top civil servant Leslie Evans confirmed Nicola Sturgeon knew about alleged concerns with Salmond’s behaviour months before the Scottish Government began a formal probe into alleged harassment.

Evans was appearing before MSPs on a Holyrood committee set up to investigate the Scottish Government’s botched inquiry into allegations about Salmond’s conduct.
