Alex Salmond says Holyrood could take legal action if Boris Johnson doesn't grant independence referendum

Scotland's parliament could take legal action domestically and internationally if Boris Johnson does not grand another independence referendum, Alex Salmond has said.

The former First Minister took to the airwaves this morning to argue the case for a second vote on the future of the country.

His new party, Alba, is looking to create " super-majority " in the Holyrood chamber following the Scottish Parliament election on May 6.

By doing so, Salmond says, it will put more pressure on the Tory Prime Minister to allow a second vote.

Asked on Good Morning Scotland what options were open if Johnson did not grand the referendum Salmond and current First Minister Nicola Sturgeon were calling for, he said: "The idea of a plebiscite is open.

"I proposed that back in 2011/12 and that was very much an option for us then if David Cameron had not agreed to a section 30.

"You can then point to domestic legal action, international legal action, international pressure, diplomatic pressure and we believe in popular and peaceful demonstration.

"We must cast this debate as a Tory prime minister against a Scottish Parliament and a Scottish nation. The whole community of the realm of Scotland - if I can use a phrase from history."

The remarks from Salmond come after STV decided against inviting the Alba Party onto its leaders' debate later this month.

Linda Grimes Douglas, head of news at STV, said: “It’s a hugely exciting time for Scottish politics and our team is primed and ready to bring viewers the most comprehensive coverage of Election 2021.

"From our leaders’ debate and one-to-ones on Scotland Tonight, to analysis and on-the-night updates as part of special programming – alongside fully comprehensive ongoing updates from across the country on STV News at Six – we’ve got it covered.”
