Alex Salmond's Alba Party to contest 2022 council elections in Scotland

Alex Salmond's Alba Party will contest the council elections across Scotland next year after it failed to win a seat in Holyrood.

The pro-independence party put forward 32 candidates at the recent Scottish Parliament with the former First Minister being the most high profile.

Since launching the party at the end of March two SNP MPs have defected as well as a number of local councillors.

As well as putting up members to contest the council elections in 2022 Alba intents to hold its inaugural conference over the weekend of September 18 and 19.

Despite some favourable opinion polls the Alba Party was unable to secure any MSPs in the parliament as they looked to secure a 'super-majority' for independence.

Interim leader of the party, Alex Salmond said: “Having established ourselves it’s now time for Alba to grow.

"There is a mandate for independence and we must see that mandate exercised.

"Our objective, because we are not an ordinary political party, is to help secure the independence of our country.

"Alba has a role, it has a significance, and that role will develop, grow and bloom over the next few years. Alba is rising."

Councillor Lynne Anderson, who was the SNP’s National Equalities Convener before leaving the SNP to join Alba, said: "Alba is here to stay. Our membership continues to grow because of the urgency in which we believe the case for independence should be progressed to ensure that Scotland’s recovery from Coronavirus is in Scotland’s hands.

“Local Communities will suffer by allowing Westminster to stay in charge of Scotland’s recovery.

"Alba has ambitious and radical plans to reduce poverty in Scotland and at next years local elections we will make the case for them in communities the length and breadth of Scotland."
