Alex Salmond brands opposition parties at Holyrood 'totally useless' as he takes aim at SNP

Alex Salmond has branded opposition parties in the Scottish Parliament 'totally useless' during a scathing attack.

The Alba Party leader, who said he would run a positive campaign, took Scottish Labour, the Tories and the Lib Dems to task for not holding the SNP to account during its time in power.

The Former First Minister also took aim at Nicola Sturgeon' s SNP government over some of its social and economic policies.

He said the SNP needs to be taken to task on some issues and the 'Union parties' he claims are not doing that because they are too busy "decrying independence".

It comes as a new opinion poll showed Alba were on course to receive five seats in the Holyrood chamber and deny the SNP and overall majority following the election on May 6.

Speaking on TalkRadio, Salmond said: "The SNP is the dominant force in Scotland, I helped make it the dominant force in Scotland, but there are various aspects of its social and economic agenda that should be criticised.

"The Unionist parties in Scotland, Labour, Tory, Liberals, are totally useless opposition.

"They provide total powderpuff opposition to the SNP on social and economic issues because they are so busy rattling on and decrying independence.

"What the SNP, and Scotland, need to improve government is a party like Alba which is supportive of the constitution which says lets get on with independence, lets get some urgency into doing it but has a stronger critique of some of the social and economic policies where the government in Scotland need to be criticised."
