Alex Salmond branded a warthog who 'rolls around in mud' by Scottish voters

Alex Salmond has been described as a warthog and 'dirty' in a new opinion poll about the Scottish Parliament election.

The former First Minister who is standing on the North East Scotland regional list under the Alba party banner has also been described as a snake and a toad by voters.

A new opinion poll by Lord Ashcroft, the former deputy chairman of the Conservative Party, asked 2,017 adults, between April 7 and 19, across the country what they thought of the political leaders in Scotland.

While the ex- SNP leader didn't come out well in the survey the current leader, Nicola Sturgeon, favoured a bit better however some voters just weren't sure.

People were asked which animal they thought each one was most like. Sturgeon tended to reflect qualities of bravery and shrewdness.

Asked about Salmond, one person said: “A warthog. Dirty, you can see him rolling around in the mud. Pretty rash and abrupt creatures that charge about the place."

While another put it more bluntly called the Alba party leader, "A snake."

A third said: "A toad. Toad of Toad Hall."

On Sturgeon, one voter said: "Nicola is a lion. I’ve sort of got that image in my head of the Lion King, you know, standing on top of the rockand surveying her kingdom and offering leadership."

Another said: "A wise owl. A wise young owl."

A third commented: “A meerkat. She looks quite alert when you speak with her, she kind of pays attention. And she kind of looks harmless – meerkats are quite harmless in general but, you know, look like they are moving about with a bit of purpose."

Sturgeon was also described as, "A wee Scottie dog. She’s quite blunt and ruthless. And because she looks a bit like one."

While one person said: "A hyena. There’s something I don’t trust about her. She’s too self-assured, I think."

Those involved in the survey were also asked to rate how positive or negative they felt towards the party leaders in Scotland.

Nicola Sturgeon was given an average score of +6 in the -50 to +50 scale.

Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross received the worst average score of -19, while Scottish Greens co-leader got -13, Willie Rennie from the Lib Dems received -12 and Labour leader Anas Sarwar received an average score of -5.
