Alex Salmond acquitted of all charges following sexual assault trial in Edinburgh

Scotland's former First Minister Alex Salmond has been acquitted of all charges.

Mr Salmond, 65, stood trial at Edinburgh's High Court accused of a string of sexual assaults and attempted rape.

He pleaded not guilty to all 13 charges which were alleged to have taken place between June 2008 and November 2014, involving nine women.

The trial began at the High Court in Edinburgh earlier this month in front of Lady Dorrian and a 15-strong jury.

Judge Lady Dorrian told jurors on Friday that they must decide whether the charges have been proven beyond reasonable doubt.

She explained there are three verdicts available: guilty, not guilty and not proven - the latter two both resulting in acquittal.

After six hours of deliberation, the jury returned a verdict of not proven on one charge of sexual assault with intent to rape and the ex-First Minster was found not guilty of all other charges.

They reached majority verdicts on all charges.

Speaking outside of the High Court in Edinburgh, Alex Salmond thanked his "brilliant" legal team as well as his family and friends who have stuck by him.

He said: “There is certain evidence that I would have liked to have seen led in this trial but for a variety of reasons we were not able to do so.

“Those facts will see the light but it won’t be this day.”

“Whatever nightmare I’ve been in over these last two years it is nothing compared to the nightmare that everyone of us is currently living through.

“People are dying, many more are going to die."

He said his advice was for people to "go home" and take care of their family.

"God help us all", he added.
