Selena Gomez has once again shared her hopes of one day becoming a mum, and this time it came with a sweet nod to her most iconic TV character.
The 33-year-old actress posted an Instagram Story celebrating her role in the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. Along with expressing her excitement about returning to the Disney world that helped make her a star, she also shared a very personal wish for her future.
“Alex Russo is a mommy 
,” she wrote, referring to her much-loved character. “Hopefully one day that’ll be me.” She paired the message with a clip from her final episode of the series on Disney+.
Fans were already buzzing after the two-part finale revealed that Alex Russo is the mother of Billie Russo, played by 15-year-old Janice LeAnn Brown. After the episode aired, Gomez and Brown spoke about the bond they had built both on screen and off. “It was very emotional, especially for me and her after the table read,” Brown said in a chat on Disney Channel’s YouTube page. Gomez quickly jumped in with her own heartfelt take, admitting, “We were just puddles.”
It is clear that the character still means a great deal to Gomez. Even before the reboot was released, she reflected on how closely she identifies with Alex.
Speaking on Jake Shane’s Therapuss podcast back in August, she called the new series a “new, refreshing take” and admitted that revisiting the role felt like stepping into an “older version of Alex.” She said the character “ultimately shaped who I am, because I feel like I am Alex.”
But beyond her screen role, Gomez has been increasingly open about her personal hopes of starting a family with her husband, producer Benny Blanco.
The pair tied the knot on 27 September in Montecito, California, and both have spoken warmly about what they imagine life will look like when children eventually arrive.
On an episode of the Jay Shetty Podcast in March, Gomez didn’t hold back when asked about her feelings on having kids. “I don’t know what will happen, obviously, but I love children,” she shared. “I love making them laugh; they’re just so sweet. So absolutely, when that day comes, I’m so excited for it.”
Blanco, 37, added his own take, describing how Gomez always gravitates towards children when they are around. He explained that she will “immediately go to the kids and have these conversations for hours with the kids.”
He also reminded her of the unique connection she has with younger fans, saying, “When you started doing this you were a kid and that was your way to connect to people, and I feel like you still feel like you have that obligation to connect with young kids. You shaped so many young people’s lives, whether it was Barney, Wizards [of Waverly Place]… you’re still finding your way to do that.”
For Gomez, the mix of revisiting Alex Russo as a mum on screen and dreaming about being one in real life seems to have come together at exactly the right moment. Fans have embraced her honesty, and it’s clear that whether on set or in her personal life, she’s already shaping herself for the role she hopes to play next.
