Alex Rodriguez, Jennifer Lopez bid to buy the Mets is over, report says

The Alex Rodriguez-Jennifer Lopez run at the Mets might be over.

On Thursday, the New York Post reported the couple is no longer interested in purchasing the New York Mets. The report indicated the Wilpon family's reluctance to sell SNY, the regional sports network of the Mets, played a role.

Sterling Partners _ the Wilpons _ are looking to sell the Mets. However, their ownership of SNY means the price could be steep.

Days before Mets pitchers and catchers reported to camp, a deal between billionaire Steven Cohen and the Wilpons fell through. The family has been searching for a buyer ever since, but has not spoken further about the matter.

In December, the Wilpons announced they were pursuing a sale with Cohen as the buyer. The reported amount: $2.6 billion.

It is difficult for others to reach that figure. The former Yankee Rodriguez and his fiancee, the entertainment superstar Lopez, have a reported net worth of $700 million.

They have money _ lots of it _ but not enough to foot the bill for the Mets. They were always going to need partners in a venture to bid on the franchise.

But it looks as if they are out of the running.
