Alex Pritchard replaces Patrick Roberts in one of three Sunderland changes at Rotherham

Alex Pritchard returned to the Sunderland side at Rotherham United as Tony Mowbray made three changes to the XI that started the weekend draw against Bristol City on Wearside. Pritchard took the place of Patrick Roberts but played on the left side of midfield with Amad switching to the right and with Jack Clarke playing up front alongside Joe Gelhardt.

Luke O'Nien came in at right-back in place of Trai Hume - who conceded an injury-time penalty against the Robins - and he dropped to the bench. Mowbray also made a change at left-back, where Dennis Cirkin made his first start since Boxing Day as he replaced Aji Alese.

Roberts, Alese, and Hume were all included on the bench, as was Costa Rica winger Jewison Bennette who returned to the squad after missing out at the weekend with a minor calf injury. Rotherham boss Matt Taylor made two changes, in his case to the side that lost 2-0 at home to Coventry City on Saturday.

Leo Hjelde and Tariqe Fosu came into the side, with Cohen Bramall and Hakeem Odoffin making way. There was no place in the squad for on-loan Sunderland defender Bailey Wright, with the rules preventing him playing against his parent club.
