Alex Palmer could return for second-leg against Sunderland after 'quite serious' incident

Lincoln City could welcome back Alex Palmer after a 'serious' incident for the second leg of the League One play-off semi-final against Sunderland.

The Imps No 1 sat out of the first leg against Sunderland last night having been hit in the face in training last week.

The West Bromwich Albion loanee has been in fine form for Lincoln this season and his absence should have been a major blow last night.

It meant that Michael Appleton was allowed to bring in Josef Bursik on an emergency loan, but the Stoke keeper pulled off a number of fantastic saves to keep Sunderland at bay.

Palmer was in attendance at Sincil Bank last night and is expected to make a return to training today.

“One day last week he got hit in the face with a ball. It was like a whiplash scenario,” said City boss Appleton.

“He didn’t feel great straight away, he didn’t really know where he was, he didn’t know what day it was, it was quite serious.

“He had the CT scan, went to hospital, everything you’d expect. Since then, we’ve been following the concussion protocols. There was a bit of a grey area whether he would have been available for tonight.

“There’s a certain pathway you’ve got to follow and I think if the game had been tomorrow [Thursday], he would have been available, but he wouldn’t have had much football in between.

“Tomorrow will be his first full-on training session with the lads who haven’t been involved tonight.

“We’ll have a better indication tomorrow/Friday if he’ll be available or Saturday.”
