A curious question surrounding Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s true place in the Liverpool starting line-up still seems to exist.
It is more than three years since the Reds signed the England international from Arsenal.
The versatile midfielder enjoyed a strong maiden season at Anfield, before it came to a premature end with an unfortunate ACL injury in the Champions League semi-final against Roma in April 2018.
The 27-year-old returned to action at the back end of the 2018/19 campaign, and last season was his first full campaign with the Reds without serious injury.
Oxlade-Chamberlain made 43 appearances in all competition last term and scored eight goals - his best since arriving on Merseyside.
He is clearly a player that has improved since first arriving from the Gunners three summers ago, but there still seems to be a question mark over where his best position truly lies.
Every summer fans of clubs across Europe call for their team to make transfers to freshen up and improve the squad for the upcoming campaign.
And this year it has been no different, with so many Liverpool fans calling on FSG and Jurgen Klopp to bring Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich to Anfield, in order to inject some more creativity into the midfield.
When playing as a midfielder, Oxlade-Chamberlain is arguably the Reds’ most creative outlet in the middle of the park, while he also occasionally plays in a wide role in the forward line.
Naby Keita and Gini Wijnaldum also add creativity to Liverpool's engine room, with Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and James Milner chipping in with the odd goal too.
Now, with the arrival of Takumi Minamino in January, Oxlade-Chamberlain is likely to find himself playing in midfield for the vast majority of next season - once he recovers from a slight injury sustained during a challenge while traning out in Austria during pre-season.
So, could Oxlade-Chamberlain be the player to add the creativity that sections of Liverpool fans are craving? And could he better his goal record from the previous campaign?
We’ll have to wait and see, but given his ability in the centre of the park and Klopp's capacity to bring out the best in his players, it could be a big campaign for the 27-year-old.
