Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain confused by Wayne Rooney advice after Liverpool midfielder told to watch Arsenal man

Wayne Rooney has revealed how he once left a young Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain confused when trying to offer him advice on England duty.

The former Everton and Manchester United forward is now with Derby County and looking to help guide young footballers at his new club.

And speaking in a new column in  The Sunday Times , he explained how he tried to offer tips to younger players on England duty.

One such player was Oxlade-Chamberlain, who was playing for Arsenal at the time, but Rooney only left the now-Liverpool man confused with his instructions.

“I remember speaking to Oxlade-Chamberlain in the England squad. He was at Arsenal," he said.

"I said to him, ‘You’re coming to the ball too much; you’ve got your back to play and you’re making it easy for defenders.’

“I told him to come short, run off the ball. I said, ‘Go and watch Marc Overmars,’ and he didn’t know who Marc Overmars was.

“I was like, ‘You’re playing out wide for Arsenal, how can you not know Overmars?'”

Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is eight years younger than Rooney, only joined Arsenal 11 years after Overmars left for Barcelona.

He joined Liverpool on deadline day in August 2018.
