Alex Murphy video leads to police searches in West Belfast

Police have carried out searches in West Belfast after a video emerged appearing to show shots being fired over the coffin of Alex Murphy.

Officers carried out the search on the Falls Road on Tuesday afternoon.

Murphy received a life sentence for the IRA killing of two soldiers in Belfast in 1988.

PSNI Superintendent Lorraine Dobson said: “As part of our investigation, we conducted a search in the Falls Road area as part of our enquiries.

“No arrests have been made, however, a number of items have been seized and taken away for examination.

“It is clear from the footage, which we believe was recorded sometime over the weekend, a number of persons were present and witnessed the volley of shots being fired, and I would appeal to them, or anyone with information, to call detectives at Musgrave Street on 101 or alternatively, information can be provided anonymously by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

DUP MLA Joanne Bunting welcomed the police probe.

Prior to the search, she said: "Displays like this cannot go unchallenged in a Belfast housing estate.

"It is unacceptable. This should not be normal. It should have no space to take place in our society. Terrorism should have no place on our streets.

"I will be raising this at the next Policing Board meeting. With the next meeting not scheduled until September, I will be exploring how this can be expedited.

"The Board should make a clear statement that they stand as one against paramilitary displays."

A Sinn Féin spokesperson said: “There is no place for guns on our streets.”
