Alex Jones thought it was too late to have baby girl as she's set to welcome daughter

Since first joining The One Show 11 years ago, it’s safe to say that Alex Jones, 44, has flourished as one of the nation’s telly sweethearts. She’s currently expecting a baby girl – a sister for sons Teddy, four, and Kit, two – with her husband, insurance broker Charlie Thomson.

How have you been feeling, Alex?

Really good, thanks – better than with the boys. At the beginning I was completely comatose and I put that down to doing Veganuary [the nationwide campaign to go vegan throughout January]. That’s how in touch I am with my body! But I was actually pregnant. I’m so lucky I’ve not had much sickness. The boys keep me so busy that I barely have time to notice. People keep asking me how many months until I’m due, but I don’t know [laughs]. I’m about two thirds of the way through.

Have you had any weird cravings?

Not really but my taste buds have changed because the smell of wine is now horrific to me. I keep trying to smell it, hoping it’s not permanent! It’s good though because it means that I don’t want to drink any.

Has pregnancy been a different experience during lockdown?

I guess so. I haven’t seen any midwives at all in person during the pandemic. I’ve had two scans and that’s it. For me that’s OK, because by this time around I hope I’d know if something was wrong. That’s why I’m grateful for the fact that it’s our third. I’m just hoping that everything’s OK because I feel OK.

Are you excited about expecting a baby girl this time?

Really excited! It’s a huge gift. Wanting a girl was always something that was there, although I would never have said it because we’re so lucky to have two lovely boys. I thought our time had passed to have a girl and that it wasn’t going to happen.

Is Charlie delighted to be having a daughter?

We both said how amazing three boys would be. Then when we opened the email which told us the sex of the baby, his little face was a picture. We were too scared to say it, but I think we both felt the same. We had both secretly thought it would be amazing if it was a girl. It’ll be really interesting to see the different dynamics. I’m such a pushover with the boys.

How did the BBC react when you told them your happy news?

They were brilliant. We’ve decided to see how I feel during the pregnancy. Now we’ve got Jermaine Jenas and Ronan Keating on board, it feels that there’s a lot of back-up in the studio. During the pandemic we’ve had so many people who’ve come on the show and become part of the family. So Rylan Clark-Neal, Michael Ball, Alex Scott – there’s a gang of us now. I feel very well supported.
