Alex Jones reveals she was back on TV an hour after doctors told her she'd had a miscarriage

One Show host Alex Jones has revealed she was back on TV an hour after doctors told her she'd had a miscarriage.

The TV star from Ammanford has revealed the heartbreaking news and has spoken about how she coped with the loss.

The mum is currently pregnant again and announced the news live on The One Show at Christmas.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Alex said: "We actually got pregnant in October 2017, when Teddy was 10 months, and we lost that baby. I didn’t realise for a long time because I had been breastfeeding and your periods don’t come back straight away."

Alex found out she was pregnant with a baby she later miscarried when her and husband Charlie Thompson, 40, had flown over to New Zealand for Christmas.

Feeling unwell, the host went to hospital where doctors discovered she was expecting.

"It was so unexpected, but we were thrilled," Alex said. "In hindsight, when I was very ill in New Zealand, that’s probably when everything was falling apart."

A few weeks later, after returning back to the UK, the couple booked a private scan to find out when the baby would be due.

But following the scan Alex was told she'd had a misscariage.

Alex said: "We learnt the baby didn’t have a heartbeat. I was around 14 weeks, which is a decent amount of time. The baby had stopped developing at about nine weeks. That was really hard. It hit us like a ton of bricks.

"It’s really odd. You’re in that room looking for answers that you’re never going to get. You’re thinking, 'Have I done something wrong? What did I do differently? Was it because we flew a long way? Was I too stressed? Was I putting too much pressure on myself?'"

Alex told the Telegraph that an hour after finding out she had a miscarriage she was back on television, despite her boss saying she didn't need to do the show.

Alex said: "‘I said, 'What else am I going to do?' It’s a horrible feeling because it is so empty. There’s nothing to say. It’s done."

The Telegraph said it was a symptomless or silent miscarriage, which then results in either a ‘natural’ miscarriage, taking medication to speed up the process, or surgery.

Six months later Alex fell pregnant again and is soon to be in her third trimester.

She revealed that this time she would take an extra month of maternity leave after saying three-and-a-half months was too short.

Alex said: "I’d thought it would be fine beforehand, but, of course, I had no idea what was coming [with having a baby]," she said.

"The BBC was amazing. They were clear there was no pressure to come back. It was me who was thinking I’d lose my job. It’s so mad. It’s irrational.

"I suppose it’s because I really respect and treasure the job. I wanted to go back to it and inherently [the industry] is fickle."

Alex, whose first child Teddy is now two, said in February she was rushed to hospital over concerns about her current pregnancy.

She then went on to thank people for the supportive messages she'd had.

"All was fine at the hospital," she added.

"His or hers little heartbeat was going like the clappers but good to check. Thanks for the messages."
