Alex Iwobi's expected Arsenal return date after Africa Cup of Nations heroics

Unai Emery's Arsenal squad is almost at full capacity.

Thursday marked the return to pre-season training for Lucas Torreira and Mohamed Elneny following their extended breaks after competing at the Copa America and Africa Cup of Nations respectively.

As a result, the midfield duo are now in contention to face Barcelona on Sunday in the Gunners' final friendly before the Premier League season gets underway next weekend.

However, one Arsenal player  - not currently injured - set to miss the trip is Alex Iwobi.

Football.london reported earlier in the summer that Arsenal intended to give all of their players who have been on international duty this summer three weeks off to recharge their batteries.

Iwobi starred for Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations, helping them be amongst the final four left in the competition. Although he and the Super Eagles suffered heartache in the semi-final as Riyad Mahrez's last gap free-kick booked Algeria's place in the final.

Therefore, Iwobi and Nigeria had to settle for a third-place play-off win over Tunisia.

That game took place on July 17 meaning three weeks from the date is August 7 so it's likely that Iwobi will report for London Colney next week.

With that said, this would result in Iwobi facing a major race to be available for the Premier League opener away to Newcastle United four days later as he will surely be short of fitness and match practice.

With six goals and nine assists to his name across all competitions last season, there's hope that the attacking midfielder can build on that in the 2019/2020 campaign.

Iwobi was a regular during Emery's first season at the club, often competing with Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey for one of the attacking slots behind Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

And amid talk of Arsenal signing a new winger, the 23-year-old has come out fighting.

He said on Twitter: "I hope we sign world class players at Arsenal and progress as a team.
