Alex Greive welcomes St Mirren signings as striker believes competition will drive club forward

Striker Alex Greive believes fresh competition will force every Saints player to raise their game next season.

St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson has already added three new faces to his squad this summer, with winger Jonah Ayunga the latest to sign on the dotted line in Paisley last week.

He joins former Motherwell pair Trevor Carson and Mark O’Hara in joining the club, with Western Sydney Wanderers star midfielder Keanu Baccus also expected to join imminently after agreeing a pre-contract switch.

Greive, currently away on international duty with New Zealand, is welcoming every new arrival as he feels a battle for places in the Buddies’ starting XI is exactly what they need to enjoy a better Premiership campaign next time around.

Speaking exclusively from his training camp in Spain, Greive told Express Sport: “We’ve still got a lot of very good players in the camp from last year and it’s exciting to see new faces coming in too.

“Competition for places is great because it only raises your game.

"You know you need to step up to keep your place in the team.

“It’s good for the entire squad and I’m already excited to get back to St Mirren and go again next season.”

Greive picked up his fifth cap for New Zealand when they faced Peru in a friendly in Barcelona yesterday afternoon, which they narrowly lost 1-0.

The All Whites face a huge World Cup play-off final clash against Costa Rica on Thursday June 14, which the Buddies striker is desperate to be involved in.
