Alex Goode says big game flop was making of Saracens and can be of England

When he thinks of the Olympic Stadium rugby star Alex Goode pictures sporting perfection.

He remembers back to London 2012 and the night he spent in Stratford watching David Rudisha smash the 800 metres world record.

“A lot of people talk about Super Saturday with Greg Rutherford, Jess Ennis and Mo Farah,” said the England fullback, who takes to the same stage today for Saracens’ league clash with Harlequins.

“That was brilliant, but to see someone go balls out from the start, to have that confidence and the ability to break one of the most incredible records in history, was mind-blowing.

“Going for a world record in an Olympic final is unheard of in a tactical race,” Goode added. “I was on my feet when the bell went. To this day it’s the most incredible sporting event I have seen live.”

Kenyan legend Rudisha had promised London 2012 boss Seb Coe he would deliver something special and today Goode has a couple of team mates similarly driven.

A week ago Billy Vunipola and Jamie George were part of an England side labelled mentally frail by Eddie Jones after blowing a massive winning lead against Scotland.

The experience left Vunipola admitting: “What hurts more than anything else is is that teams probably think now that we can do all the fancy stuff but when it comes down to it and the real questions are asked, can we stay in the fight?”

Goode insists he does not recognise Jones’ characterisation from his years playing with many of the Red Rose squad for club and country - but says the solution could lie in Saracens' recent past.

“These guys are incredible competitors,” he said. “We’ve been in very tough situations many times here and we've come out and solved problems well.

“We’ve adjusted and we’ve won in situations where perhaps we shouldn’t have, through our resilience and our ability to back ourselves.

Unsung Wales tapped into sense of injustice to fuel Grand Slam glory ride

“But last season we lost heavily at home to Clermont in Europe and it made us really look at ourselves. And this is maybe something for England.

“It took losing in that manner for us to consider what are we about as a club, are we living the values we talk about. We sat down, had a lot of conversations and came back much stronger for it.”

Owen Farrell's future as England captain questioned after wild Scotland draw

The Lions lock not only inspired his country to the Grand Slam he equalled Gethin Jenkins’ 134-cap record.

It is the 33-year-old’s third Grand Slam and his most impressive - having led by powerful example as Wales ran up a national record 14 straight wins.

Jones won the individual vote ahead of team mates Liam Williams, Hadleigh Parkes and Josh Adams and England duo Jonny May and Tom Curry.

“I’m very flattered,” said the Swansea-born star, who is set to sign a new deal with his home town Ospreys. “For me as the captain it’s a validation of what we’ve done as a squad throughout the campaign.

“To be up there as a nominee with three other Welsh players and two outstanding players from England would have been more than enough and I’m very grateful to the people who have taken the time to vote.”
