Alex Dyer leaves Kilmarnock as St Johnstone collapse sees manager depart by mutual consent

Kilmarnock have parted company with manager Alex Dyer after a galling collapse against St Johnstone left the Ayrshire side ninth.

The hosts took a 2-0 lead a Rugby Park thanks to goals from Chris Burke and Aaron Tshibola.

But Killie collapsed after the break as they shipped three to compound a run of just three wins in 11 games.

It left Dyer with the worst points-per-game record of any Kilmarnock manager since their return to the top flight, and it was enough for the club to call time on his reign.

A statement announced: "Kilmarnock Football Club can confirm the departure of Manager Alex Dyer by mutual consent following today’s 3-2 defeat to St Johnstone.

We are grateful to Alex for all he has achieved with the club since joining Killie in October 2017. However, recent results and performances have been disappointing and with 24 points from 25 Premiership matches, we believe this is the right time for a change."

Dyer came to the club as assistant to Steve Clarke and was part of a management team that secured third place in the 2018-19 campaign.

He remained as assistant when Angelo Alessio took over, and stepped in as interim boss after the Italian's sudden departure.

Dyer struggled after being given the top job permanently though, with Saturday's loss leaving him with a worse record than Gary Locke.

Owner Billy Bowie said: "This was a tough decision for the club and not one which was made lightly. However in light of recent results and in the interest of preserving our Scottish Premiership status, we feel this is the correct time for a change.

“Alex is a great man who I have the utmost respect for and he will always be warmly welcomed back to Rugby Park.

“I want to thank Alex for his important contribution to some truly wonderful days here at Kilmarnock and I wish him every success in the future.”
