Australian Alex de Minaur's US Open run has come to an end, with a comprehensive straight sets loss to second seed Dominic Thiem at Flushing Meadows.
The match on Arthur Ashe Stadium took just 2 hours and 4 minutes, as Thiem became the first Austrian to make the US Open semis with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 victory.
The 26-year-old claycourt specialist came in as the favourite, and his powerful groundstrokes proved a big weapon.
His game worked fine on hardcourt, yielding 43 winners to de Minaur's 17.
Thiem broke in the opening game, and although de Minaur broke back two games later, he found it impossible to hold serve against a barrage of attacking play.
The Austrian reeled off four games in a row to seal the first set.
There was a brief period early in the second set where de Minaur took control with two easy service holds, but the game turned for good in the fifth game of the set where the Australian blew a 40-0 lead to lose the next five points and the break.
From there, Thiem took the next three games to go two sets up, with a stranglehold on the match.
The pair swapped breaks early in the third set, but once the Austrian broke again and consolidated for a 4-1 lead, there was only one likely outcome.
De Minaur was playing in a grand slam quarter-final for the first time. Thiem has made the final of three grand slam events, losing all three.
The Austrian will now face Russian Daniil Medvedev for a place in the final.
